Death to Playa Glo Worms

The goal of this site is to be a community resource for people who want to share ideas, projects, reviews, and deals on non-glow-stick based lighting technologies.

The idea for this site came to me on Nevada Highway 443 on the way back from Burning Man this year. There was a ruptured bag of trash on the highway, and it seemed the entire contents were spent glow sticks and necklaces. Thinking back over my burn, I realized that more than half of the MOOP I picked up had been dead chemical lights. As much as I loved light sticks as a kid, I was suddenly thinking of them as very wasteful. Use once, and throw away; and they are not recyclable. Combine that with the casualness with which people discard them and it is no wonder many scuba diving destinations have banned them.

I've been to a lot of 'leave no trace' events, on and off of the playa; and it's easier to live up that ideal when you pack light on items that generate a lot of waste. With glow sticks, they become 100% waste once they are used. With all the recent push to 'be green', it seems almost irresponsible to be using single-use items like light sticks.

With these thoughts in mind, I thought I'd set up a site where people could exchange ideas and resources for re-usable lighting and costuming. There are lots of alternatives to chemical lights, and many of them can be more artfully incorporated into bicycles, costuming and camps.
